Why must fitness be brought into the picture?
Would you agree with the sentiment that omnipotent Almighty Natural
Selection is everywhere (omnipresent) scrutinizing every minute detail of
organisms? For some people the worship of Natural Selection has replaced
worship of unseen deities. Paleyism yields to Darwinism.
OTOh, would you agree that selection is a primary but not exclusive operator
in evolutionary processes (leaving the door open for concepts such as
genetic drift and Kimura's neutral theory of molecular evolution among other
things)?
