Example: if a phobic state already available in a person is
associated/anchored to the behaviors of alcoholism, i.e. drinking, the
person will not be able to drink without entering into the phobic state.
Executed properly, the phobic state can be anchored to the person's
anticipation of drinking, and so stop them from reaching for the bottle. (I
hasten to add that this is a crude intervention, and not recommended except
in unusual cases where a gentler and more complete intervention is not
possible. But it illustrates the notion of mental programming and its
influence on behavior.) If there was reason to do so, the 'don't reach for
the bottle' behavior could be expanded to include 'and "teach" others to not
reach for the bottle', thus extending the intervention to the mental
    programming of others.
