I'd settle for an elaboration on the release of isotopes. I thought it was
the isotopes used in P.E.T. scans which emitted (released) positrons
(positive electrons) which subsequently collided with nearby negative
electrons in e+/e- annihilation events which resulted in the production of
gamma radiation which itself was detected by scintillation devices in the
P.E.T. setup. This scintillation would IIRC be converted by a computer into
a readable false-color image which gives a rough estimation of relative
metabolic activity in various regions of the brain.
I think the release of positrons themselves is explicit in the term
"positron emission tomography". Is a positron or the gamma radiation
produced by an e+/e- annihilation event an isotope?
