    Those interested in real data should take a look at:

    Colin Martindale, The Clockwork Muse: The Predictability of Artistic Change,
    Basic Books, 1990.

    While Martindale nowhere uses the term or concept of "meme" he more than
    makes up for that "deficiently" by providing a great deal of data on the
    evolution of art, mainly poetry and music, but also painting. It does
    discuss mechanisims of selection and variation.
