BTW -- in regard to my comments on waypoint mapping, I forgot to mention the
more relative work done on London taxi drivers and "The Knowledge" where a
supposedly significant difference was found in their hippocampus regions
when compared to 'normals'. When you ask a taxi driver how he learns "The
Knowledge" you find that he uses waypoint mapping "Up road X to the Y pub.
turn left and go on the the X underground station .. etc etc....".. in other
words we see the same mechanisms is these drivers as we see in rats running
a maze... (there was a TV program on gaining the Knowledge and that too
showed these sorts of processes going on, there is no memorising of a map of
London but more a linking of points into relationships; local distinctions
making a global map. The emphasis was on the 'correct' path given a context
e.g. how to get from victoria station to heathrow airport at 5:00 on a Good
    Friday).

    best,

    Chris.
