The 'red, tooth and claw' statement was about a then-perceived constant and
violent struggle for resources between organisms. Today we know that whilst
parts of nature are like this, there are also parts where peaceful
co-operation, altruism etc. also exist between organisms.
On the point of Roman games, it's worth stating the simple reality that the
pre-mass media Romans were infinitely more bloodthirsty in their leisure
pursuits than the supposedly ultra-violent mediated societies of today. (But
maybe that was already the point for mentioning them, I skipped a few
posting the other day, after receiving about 60 odd in one day).
