Greetings, Kenneth and all list members. I am back from my mini-sabbatical
and will try and catch up with your numerous emails. I'm glad to see that
the Rumsfeld thread has mutated to other subjects!

If you mean that the seizure of parts of Palestine by the Zionist movement
and Jewish inhabitants of Palestine and their declaration of Statehood in
1948 was 'not of their own choosing', I must disagree. Certainly it was not
of Palestinian choosing, as their opposition was well demonstrated in the
strikes of the 1920s and 30s.

But that it was of Zionist choosing seems undeniable: you need only begin
with Theordor Herzl's wonderful DER JUDENSTAAT, the establishment of the
Zionist Organization, Chaim Weizmann's leadership and objectives, Weizmann's
visits to the Ottoman government, Ben Gurion's early thoughts on the need to
fight the Palestinians, the multiple Zionist organizations that ably
supported Jewish settlement and military preparation in Palestine, the
diplomatic initiatives with the UK, French and Russian governments to gain
their support for a Jewish home in Palestine, the Zionist attacks on the
British Mandatory authority when it seemed that Britain would seek to limit
Jewish settlement in Palestine, the multiple Zionist assertions that
Palestine was an empty land and could therefore be turned over to a Jewish
State without causing harm, the skillful "Fight the 1939 White Paper as if
their were no WWII, and fight WWII as if there were no White Paper" Zionist
policy, the extraordinary effort to enlist American Jews in encouraging the
Truman administration to support the creation of the State of Israel, and
finally, the state of military readiness that the Jewish community in
Palestine had achieved by the end of WWII (arms supplies, training, military
    organization, battle plans)....

Having said all of this, it is also clear that the Zionists were blinded by
their sense of dire necessity: first to provide world Jewry with some
diplomatic protection, and then to receive Holocaust survivors and begin to
rebuild world jewry psychologically. That there were Palestinians already
living in Palestine, who had their own rightful expectations of ridding
themse4lves of colonial masters and achieving their independence, was a
surprise, in the most fundamental sense of the term, to Zionists and to the
    Israeli population.

I will continue these thoughts and turn to the makings of a solution in my
next email, under the new subject heading: "Toward a solution: Israel and
    Palestine."

    Lawrence
