Where does all this leave us? I feel nothing but the greatest sadness and
compassion for Israelis and Palestinians both. It is easy to point fingers
at their excesses. But the most basic reality is that they, like us, are
human beings. They bleed and suffer like us. And they are both locked into a
most horrible situation. Neither knows how to disengage, and it is too much
to expect that they can of themselves do much different than they are now.
The memetic locks are now hard-wired.
If a solution is to be found, these memetic locks must be broken. We must
look beyond the past and the recriminations that the past so richly gives
rise to. The nightmarish present is the only reality that really matters at
this point, that and the faint shimmerings of a cooperative solution, where
those may be discerned amidst the carnage.
