Here's a simpler way to explain the position I outlined in some
detail in my preceding post.
Memes must consist of ideation (meaning), execution and
apprehension. Without 1) internal ideation, the behaviors are
reduced to being either genetically circumscribed or random, not
memetic, and thus cannot be subject to intentionally directed
meaning mutation. Without 2) externalizing execution of the
ideation by the transmitter, in speech or other action, and 3)
perceptual apprehension of the externalized transmission by the
receiver, the ideas cannot replicate, thus they cannot be subject to
the freely chosen selection of which candidates the receiver picks
to ideationally internalize; such choices differentiate the replicative
rates of the various candidate memes. Both mutation and
selection are necessary for evolution, memetic or otherwise.
