There are a number of reasons, mostly psychological ones i'd say.
When i was a kid my parents bought me a pet so i could learn to
feel responsible for another living being. Furtheron a lot of pets also
help people. Horses for riding, dogs for hunting and protection, cats
to get rid of the rats, parrots for detection of noxious gas (recently
    used in middle-east countries).
