    I'd say it was bloody mindedness stemming from someone else deciding
    when you're going to die (I know that's what would piss me off about
    it), and where appropriate, a desire to get back to family if possible
    (although as I say they may have just simply have been seizing control
    of their fate).

    Also, if they were definitely resigned to dying, they'd have been just
    as rational as all humans are - dying with the least other 'friendlies'
    dying too is definitely the preferable option.
