'Black Adder' is a major, major comedy series over here. Do watch it if you
get the chance. Mr Bean really is the nadir of Atkinson's comedic skills
(although ironically enough his most financially successful). There's a lot
of historical humour, as well as contemporary satire, in the Black Adder
series- each series is set in a different historical period. I'm sure some
of the comedy won't travel, but isn't that always the case? (I recently saw
an episode of The Simpsons where they travelled to Australia- well, it was
supposed to be Australia, but the accents were more like people from London-
I can see now why many Aussies dislike Americans almost as much as they
dislike Brits).
Don't forget that many major documentary series these days are
co-productions between the BBC and some of your PBS affiliates. Of course,
the big difference is that no-one watches PBS, whilst the BBC gets big
audiences (although not as big as it used to thanks to satellite, cable, and
now digital).
