    I don't see, however, how guns, or gun use could be genetically
    determined (surely, even if it was, then mistaking a banana for a gun would
    be rather non-adaptive :-)).

    "mistaking" a banana for a gun isn't the same as pretending that it is a gun.
    In play, the banana is adapted for use as something it's not.
