    Evolution achieves survival and replication by trial and error. The same principle is applied not withstanding biology or memetics, not withstanding fashion, custom or religion.

    The question who's answer goes beyond tautology, would be what confers onto different religions survival of practice and conviction by people, and what makes them most readily contagious.

    And that study long predates evolutionary theory, much less memetics.
