Yes, this seems plausible to me. After all elements of the Jesus
story were clearly worked out to fit in with Jewish prophecies (or, to
ameliorate believers, fulfilled prophecies) about a messiah in troubled
times etc. Of course the cruxifiction helped a lot, a focal event of
martyrdom, which the disciples probably worked out behind Jesus' back (they
recognised that death can be a good career move).
