<What a waste of the letter "u". What purpose does "u" serve in this
word honor? And while you're on a spelling flame binge, try double checking
"occurrence". I'm not the best speller in the world, but my handy dandy
_Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary_ says you're in error.<
You got me there Scott, hoist by my own petard.
<Mispronunciation by whose standard?>
By the standard of the people who's language you speak.
<I see our variations as an improvement.>
Some American spellings are (I shall say this softly to prevent
ostracism from the UK :-)) improvements, such as spelling things like
centre, with the e and r the right way round. Others, like pronouncing
aluminium as aluminum don't make sense, or dropping letters out of words
that change the pronunciation- honor, labor, pedophile, divers (as in
diverse, not as in the plural of diver).
<When Brits get around to fully dismantling the vestiges of
monarchy, they can start lecturing us about politics and such. As far as gun
control goes, we know full well why Yanks with muskets instill fear in
Brits, unless it involves our stepping in to tip the scale of power in their
favo(u)r ;-)>
Again, fair point re the monarchy (my personal get out is that I'm a
republican). I think there is also a vestige of disgruntlement over that
colonial war loss, but be thankful that we found Australia a few years
later, otherwise we'd have come back, and Mel Gibson would've stood no
chance.

<I wonder what memes have influenced the situation in Northern
Ireland.>
A huge range of factors here, nationalism and religion probably are
the main ones though.
