I'd assume that someone who published an article
called "Selective neurone death as a possible memory
mechanism" in the journal _Nature_ (1971. Vol. 229:
pp. 118-9) might have a passing knowledge of the
memory literature at that time. I'm kinda funny that
way, I suppose. He cites several references in that
article, but I haven't had a chance to do any digging
yet. Yet, yes, I'd say this Dawkins authored article
is an indicator of familiarity.
I find the similarities between Dawkins meme notion
and Julian Huxley's noogenetics more striking though,
than any vague theoretical similarity between the meme
and the mneme. I would assume Dawkins was acquainted
with some of Huxley's writings.
I recall Aaron Lynch posting on a more direct
connection between Dawkins and Cloak, but still find
other relatively unexplored avenues appealing.
