Within the dialectic of explanation and understanding, which applies to
discourse generally, textual exegesis must contend with another
dialectic, and that is, according to Paul Ricoeur, the dialectic between
distanciation and appropriation in search of the proper critical distance
from a perused text. An example borrowed from perception is the
'forest for the trees' argument; one who was nose-up on the trunk of a
tree could only see a section of bark, and could not even discern the
presence of other trees; however, if one is sufficiently removed from the
forest, one could not even discern the treeline. Depending upon the
object of the exegesis, there could be several different 'sweet spots'
from which to approach a particular text.
