My son is about to start a PhD program at the University of Texas. He visited the school a month ago and reported on a similar experiment they had invited him to join. The project involved listening to children learning to talk and recording everything they said. The goal was to determine if they
a) talked in 'babbled' sentences from the very beginning, only uttering a sensible word from time to time or
b) picked up words one at a time and strung them together into sentences as their vocabulary increased.
It sounds like they are doing very interesting work there and I hope to get more first hand information in the future.
