    I'm not at all sure the oriental is capable in the same way as the
    caucasian to grow beards. There might be a stigma of 'not-us' attached in
    Japan for a man with a beard, much more than here in the US. I had a full
    beard in '71, and it was not a usual appearance for a young man at all,
    even with the hippie thing.

    But if you can, you don't should, and if you can't, you don't fret. (You
    can always teach....)

    And don't forget another reason- keeping the neck warm in cold
    climates.... Hirsuteness in general is a retainer of body warmth, and
    much more important in the north.
