This article by Ray Kurzweil explains the trends I was talking about that
will lead to language becoming an internal exchange rather than an external
exchange based on the manipulation of sound waves.

    http://www.kurzweilai.net/meme/frame.html?main=/articles/art0184.html

It also explains the exponential increase of vocabulary items as well as the
reasons for it, though not directly as it is more concerned with technology
    than linguistics.

    Cheers,

    Grant
