Dear Colleagues - The McLuhan Program is one of the co-sponsors of an
exhibition, symposium and an essay competition on the Dreyfus Affair. I am
sending you this information with the hope that you will circulate it to
graduate students who might be interested in competing in the essay
competition. Thanks for your help in this matter.

Here is the announcement which can be found at www.homestead/zolaprize:

    The Beitler Family Foundation

    in association with the
University of Toronto Art Centre and
McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology

                    Zola Prize $1000

                    Call for Entries:

For an international essay competition in commemoration of
Emile Zola's extraordinary moral courage as author of
"JAccuse!" during the Dreyfus Affair. Essays will
address issues surrounding the public role of journalists
and writers as responsible citizens and the impact of media
on social justice. The Zola Prize/Prix Zola will be
announced at the opening of the large exhibition devoted
to the Dreyfus Affair at the University of Toronto Art
                    Centre September 15-October 31, 2000.

One hundred years ago, the French novelist, Emile Zola
placed his reputation and career in the service of ideals
of truth and justice in a bid to establish the innocence
of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, wrongly condemned for treason.
It was Zola's decisive act, the publication of his open
letter to the President of the French Republic,
"JAccuse...!" which inspired the national and
international response that led to the exoneration
of Alfred Dreyfus. The writer, Anatole France
would later describe Zola's action as "a moment in
                    the conscience of humanity."

What motivates the journalist or writer to act according
to civic conscience? What was the significance of
intellectual engagement at the turn of the last century?
What situations confront contemporary journalists and
intellectuals across the globe, in the face of newer media
                    and a new century?

                    Eligibility:

The competition is international in scope and open to
entries from students currently enrolled in undergraduate
                    and graduate programs.

                    Requirements:

Entries (two hard copies and an IBM compatible disc in
ASCII or MS word) in English or French, should be
                    well-argued, thought-provoking essays suitable for
possible future publication (2500 words maximum).

                    Postmark deadline for submissions:

                    July 15, 2000

Entries will be judged by a panel of
                    internationally-recognized journalists, scholars, and
writers. The $1000 prize and two recognition awards of
                    $100 will be awarded.
