I was wondering weather Terrence Deacons approach to memetics
in his article "The trouble with memes (and what to do about it)"
from 1999 in the Semiotic Review of Books has received critique. It
seems very tempting to see memes as Peirceian "sign vehicles"
and it would indeed solve many troubles memetics seems to be
having. I believe we can talk of an evolution of signs, and the sign
vehicle as the replicator. Human organism, but in this also case
any object that can take part in semiosis (books, TV, art, traffic
signs aso.) would probably count as substrat and the selective
enviroment.
I would be greatful for any recommendations on articles or books
where semiotics and memetics are studied and compared. In
Journal of Memetics Derek Gatherers article from 1997
"Macromemetics: ..." gives some thoughts on semiotics, but does
not deal with them in more detail.
