The fMRI work done by Dr. Cytowic is quite convincing. Of course, he
dismisses poetic descriptions such as "singers who when they sing see
colours" as just that; simply poetic and not cases of real synethesia. He
also tends to pooh-pooh's the claims of infant synethesia, noting that there
is not any data to support this viewpoint, but does acknowledge finding some
cases of childhood synethesia which seemed to subside at the onset of
puberty.
