On what do you base this strange association? I'd hazard that conservative
Republicans tend to favor hunter's rights and shy away from supporting
animal rights issues, but what, in the "neo-conservative mindset" would
compel them to torture and kill harmless puppy dogs?
Granted many of them probably couldn't draw a distinction between a
conservationist who works to protect endangered and threatened animal
species from extinction and an animal rights activist who works to reduce
the exploitation of animals in laboratories, farms and rodeos.
I could hypothetically see a situation where conservationist and animal
rights interests might clash, if the latter take such a political hard line
against animal research that it impacts research on wildlife.
Some right-wingers might lump em all (conservationists and animal rights
activists) together under the label of "bunny huggers". OTOH, what would
preclude a conservative from moderately embracing an issue like conservation
or animal rights, yet towing the rightist hard line on other issues?
