No, they did so because they had committed themselves to a military system that denies them certain freedoms (US military are not covered under the US Constitution, but under the UCMJ, the Uniform Code of Military Justice) so that they may be organized into a fighting force that is more efficacious in protecting those constitutional freedoms for others (including their friends and family) and for themselves once they leave military service. At least that was my rationalization when I spent a tour of duty in a fascistic top-down organization in order to preserve, protect and defend a bottom-up participatory democracy.
