    IMHO Because most that environmental damage has a) already been done to
    western nations in many cases irretrievably so, but we don't care as we have
    cars, and TV and central heating, bears and wolves aren't trying to eat us,
    and b) because the environmental degradation now, is largely occuring in the
    developing world, where out of sight out of mind (although here the West
    sometimes acts as hypocritically as is possible by telling the peasants of
    India that they have to put up with man-eating tigers because they look
    nice) [alright being a bit unfair, and I do think tigers should be saved,
    but hopefully my point gets across very subtlely...]
