In the language of fitness landscape modeling one would say that epistatic
interactions between a meme and other memes will create different optima
for the term 'meme' depending on the environment of other memes and the
effect that the definition of varying definitions of 'meme' has upon their
fitness. In other words, rather than have a ideal definition of 'meme'
which is consistent across a population we have multiple definitions which
are locally optimized within differing individuals minds depending on what
other memes they have.
