Because some meanings are more readily passed on than others, and more readily received than others, and meanings tend to mutate (a lot of time people do this intentionally) to be more transmissable and receivable (the 'hook') as well as to evolve defences against competing memes (the 'filter'). Simply saying 'meaning' simpliciter does not communicate this evolutionary dynamic. Memetics is, in a sense, the evolutionary theory of meaning.
