The use of a meme is a process and the meme is just a meme.
So i don't see how you come to your conclusion. When i use a 
meme for learning something then the use is "advancing 
knowledge" but the particular meme could be used for other 
purposes aswell. I'd say the use depends on the user and the 
meme just sits there waiting for the next user and his personal 
task.
