I thank you for the references. I read Matt Ridley's book, The Origins of
Virtue a year or so ago. It was a good read. Since I live close to UCSD
(where I am an alumnus) I should have no trouble getting my hands on
Calvin's books. I also try to keep up with what's going on at the
Neurosciences Institute next door. Their approach to AI is based on
evolutionary purposes. There's a saying I keep hearing around UCSD: "You
don't have a body, you ARE a body." I also see the body as an emergent
colony of mindless individual cells. So I eagerly look forward to grappling
with the books you mentioned.
