    The only short straight forward answer to that question is "a cult".

    There's no precise definition, but it is definately what's generally
    understood as a "personality cult" around L Ron Hubbard, and can have much
    the same effect on families as cults are generally considered to have.
    They are utterly ruthless in pursuit of their aims.

    I speak as someone who has direct experience, both of Scientology and
    other organizations that have been accused of being cults. And the
    brother of one of my best friends has been into Scientology for something
    approaching 30 years, and a full-time employee for over 20.
