Taliban is not a tribe; it is a religious fundamentalist movement, based
largely but not exclusively within the Pashtun tribe of Pakistan and
Afghanistan. Taliban and non-Taliban Pastuns (such as the Awami) sometimes
oppose each other over political and cultural issues, and sometimes work
together, e.g. in opposition to the Hazaras, Tajiks and Uzbeks of the
    "Northern Alliance."

But your point, IMO, is essentially correct: that tribalism is still
prevalent and well. The response of the American people to Sept 11 might
    also be seen as tribal.

The Afghan-US situation would make for a great study in memetics. I've done
a superficial study of Bush's (accidental or not) use of language re. Sept
11 that could be seen as one of the launch points for memes that then
effectively swept the country and the UK.
