On 11/02/01 08:25, Vincent Campbell said this-

    >I had the Bonanza theme going round my
    >head yesterday, remember Bonanza?

    Interestingly, I sort of do....

There is a new show called 'The Ponderosa' (which I haven't seen at all),
that I've seen ads for, and, while I certainly remember the old theme
music and even the names of all the characters, I could not recall the
actual name of the original show, trying all the usual mnemonic tricks,
picturing the opening sequence, the faces of the actors, etc., and didn't
remember it, just could not remember that name- until reading your post.
    Bonanza. Right.

Not that it was worth watching after what's his name left....

    >This also brings to mind the question of mimesis, like insects that
    >look like plants, and vice versa. Clearly no conscious intent is involved
    >there, but information transmission occurs, and they are deceits also.

I'd be careful speaking of 'information' there, and/or 'deceit'. Sounds
like an open door for intelligent design.... They are niches of
    adaptation, though.

    >Like the insect that is unaware it looks
    >like a twig, perhaps we are actually unaware that the self merely serves an
    >adaptive purpose.

Culture could be just our own giant termite hill.
