I don't think you're splitting hairs. I wanted to make the point that a
promise of paradise -- or indeed, any fairy tale -- was not necessary to
inspire people to sacrifice their lives. Napoleon made the point that all it
took was a shred of cloth and a scrap of metal.

Is there not a slim chance of a difference in attitude from someone
willing to lose his life in the defense of his country (imagined or
whole), and someone willing to expend his life on an offense by his
country (imagined or whole)?
