Understanding memetic principles is kinda like taking a logic
course. We all practice logic in our linguistic exchanges, anyway,
but once one has explicitly studied the logical arguments that can
be applied - and recognized in others, and the logical fallacies that
should be avoided - and exposed in others, one's ability to use
logic in one's language and appreciate it in the lanfuage of one's
interlocuters is honed and grown. Likewise, we all already use
(and are used by) memetic hooks and filters, but actually
understanding what is happening to and through us, that is, being
explicitly aware of the existence and nature of the process that is
always already going on with us, allows us to increase the "used"
proportion and decrease the "used by" proportion of that equation,
so that we more purposefully select the memes we embrace, and
more purposefully reject the memes we refuse, than we did before.
Knowledge of the structure and functioning, that is, the character,
of the process, and one's subsequent heightened conscious
awareness of its action, increases one's degree of active and
    reactive power over it.
