    Hi Joe E. Dees -

    >What's a thermostat? A rheostat?

A thermostat is a switch/thermometer combo, that thing on the wall in
most centrally heated buildings, that you adjust, and that regulates the
    heating/cooling system.

It used to be a simple mercury switch on a thermal coil, but I suspect,
especially in these days of mercury hysteria, more and more of them are
digital switches coupled to voltage controls.

Anyway, there might be a rheostat in those.... The mercury switch ones
    were mostly mechanical.
