see "objective" in X OED (2d)

I've looked over the weekend for the cite for the article that brought this
to my attention, but have been unable to locate it. Think it was an article
in a law journal by S. Chafee (about 1925) or Glanville WIlliams about 1948
that first brought this to my attention. The specific legal issues as I
recall was that common law courts still use the old meanings.

The date I gave of '100 years ago' is certainly in error (that was after all,
1901), 18th Century may be more realistic.

This has never related directly to my study but was noted as a part of a more
personal collection of unusual things - like the report in the Times about
1840 of a merman being washed up at Bristol and put in display in the town
    hall. )(cf Times Index).
