      Hi there,

I am a new member on this List and am greatly interested in Memes. I was first introduced to the concept by Douglas Klimesh (he may be on your List as well). After reading the letter from T.J. Olney and the reply from one of your other List members, I wonder if I got the idea of Memes correct.

To me, genes are genes and memes are memes. I almost see the memes as the esoteric equivalent of genes, but NOT tied together, like the two are a duality. Genes get transferred the 'normal' way through reproduction, while I understand that memes, which are totally non-physical, get transferred from person to person, when people have mental contact with one another. For instance, me reading about memetics, whether in a book, magazine, letters of e-mails, sends me a lot of memes (almost knowledge). Just two people meeting in the street and looking at one another will transfer memes. Everything we learn, necessarily from others or other outside sources, fills us with memes. At the same time we transfer memes to the people we come into contact with. I used to call it "touching" people, and people "touching" us in return.
This acquired characteristics (Lamarque would have loved this) become part of the Personality, AND MAY THEN WELL BE TRANSFERRED TO FUTURE GENERATIONS in the form of genes in the DNA.
Or would they be transferred to future issue by non-physical means?

      Hi Dini,

I am not sure if Robin was refering to me though, but IMHO I think he did.
I am pleased to know that Doug is still around. Long time, no see !!
How is Doug these days, still in love !?
Give him my regards. We exchanged some posts a time ago, but our
relationship diluted too mush. Hope to hear from him again though.
Say, my door is always open. He knows my address.

      But to the essence...

I must say I was a little bit surprised to learn that you were introduced in
memetics by Doug and in fact adapted in some way his approach.
I suppose you read his essay about Meme Storage in DNA !?
If not, go to his webpages, you 'll find it there.

For your stance about memetics, you already noticed that, there is little
or not any support, but don 't be disappointed, keep on trackin ' ......meme-
tics can be fun in many ways. Stay ferm and be consequent, that is my
      motive...
As I from my side of the great water, your idea is as good as mine and
like Robin said I do still cling to it, even the evidence for the contrary is against
me all the time, and probably will for a long time to come and maby forever.
But, that does not mean that I give up the fight, I still search the net for info
to support my idea. I found a few items worth for further eximination.

The reason why I cling to it, is of a personal nature.
Those matters I already explained in some way on this list, what for once
led to threads about Memetic Saturation, Gender Bias for Memes and Me-
metic Engineering. All of them ended up in some kind of chaos, but the most
fruitful, still today is memetic engineering, a topic where Lawrence de Bivort
      can tell you more about.
And I agree with you if you say that there is mush more going on inside
our physical being than the genetics ' eye can/ will/ may see.
Science is all about evidence, Darwin found it, Dawkins found it, Einstein
found it even though he thought he was wrong, it seems that nowadays his
greatest blunder turns out to be his greatest legacy. That as an aside...
Evidence I did not yet find, a " hypothesis " how it would happen I can give
you I suppose, any theory regarding such a process I can distil out of my
      writings, I hope...
Maby we can exchange some thoughts first....

In the meanwhile, Dini, I suggest you check out my previous posts...
Go to the archives of this list, click on Kenneth Van Oost, read all about it.
For any reply you will have to wait untill Monday afternoon.
It is a great day for memetics...in one single day, the population which do
      believes doubled...

      Best regards,

      Kenneth

( I am, because we are) two now.
