    Vincent:
a bit less than double the average murder rate
across the whole of the UK (which is around 800 murders a year across the
    whole country).

    Derek:
a bit tangential to the thread, but while we're on the subject of murder
stats, there were no murders at all within the City of Glasgow limits
between 1928 and 1945 (although there were a few manslaughter cases). The
record was broken by a man called John Lyons, a well known Glasgow gangster
who killed a sailor in Union Street in a case of mistaken identity (he
thought it was a rival gangster).
