Hi Kate,
I'm a Danish ph.d.-student (for just over a week now) at the department
for film and media at Copenhagen University. I have been lurking on this
list for a few months trying to get more information about memetics
which I find a highly interesting topic. My plan is to use memetics in
an evolutionary perspective on media history.
But back to the topic... I wouldn't call Jyllands-Posten a far-right
paper. But it is definitely located on the right wing. I think they are
pretty much on line with our present government which is right wing but
not extreme. I could, though, imagine that people for the far left
sometimes are inclined to call Jyllands-Posten (and the government)
far-right wing. But that is a bit of an overstatement which probably is
caused by frustration and disagreements. Maybe the report that you cite
origins from the left wing?

Here's something odd. I accessed this wiki article last night, via
google, trying as Tonie had been to find the cartoons for myself. And
in the section about Danish Journalistic Traditions, it pointed out
that, according to a 2004 report by the European Network Against Racism,
a disproportionate amount of editorial space is devoted in the Danish
press to negative reporting on ethnic minorities. And it said that the
Jyllands-Posten (where the cartoons originally appeared) was singled out
amongst the worst offenders. Going back to this bit just now to get the
quote I notice that it has been edited out.
I've checked back to the original source - the 2004 report - and it
describes this newspaper as "Denmark's largest far-right paper" but I
have to confess I can't quite understand the relevant tables of
statistics it contains so I don't know whether it's accurate to say that
the JP was singled out or not. The wiki page about this paper
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgenavisen_Jyllands-Posten) says it's
Denmark's biggest-selling daily and presents it as centre-right not
far-right.
It would take a lot more work on my part to get at the truth about its
political background: could any Danes on the list enlighten me?
