This is an addendum to my previous post. Aunger again
attributes a function to ribosomes that I'm not
familiar with, but my biology is a little rusty. On
page 165 of _The Electric Meme_ Aunger says that
ribosomes "construct DNA in the cytoplasm of cells".
Can Derek or Chris please explain how ribosomes do
this? If we're talking eukaryotes, he's at least
gotten the location wrong.
Alberts et al in _Molecular Biology of the Cell_ (4th
ed) define cytoplasm as follows: "[c]ontents of a cell
that are contained within its plasma membrane but, in
the case of eucaryotic cells, outside the nucleus."
They have a definition of nucleus that Aunger might
appreciate: "[p]rominent membrane-bounded organelle in
a eucaryotic cell, containing DNA organized into
chromosomes."
