Hi, Vincent,
The Sonia Ghandi story played on the front pages on the front pages of the
US papers I read, (Washington Post, NYT, WSJ).
The explanations given for her withdrawal from the PM slot were the protests
over her Italian birth, and the sense of entitlement that her name carried.
The stories also suggested that regardless of her eventual formal title she
would continue to wield substantial influence and power within the Party.
The press spent some time discussing who might be chosen PM and why, and
even more time on the reasons for the unexpected triumph of Congress.
Not much was made of Mrs Ghandi's race.
