"Spread" in the snippet below has the same meaning as dissemination or
replication. Replication is "self-replication" since there must be a prior
instance. I don't think "self-defending" has ever been central issue with
memes.
They are close enough that the word meme has displaced "culturgen," even
for EO Wilson.
