Hi,
Missed Dawkins, but did see Greenfield last night, and may watch the 'end of
the universe' programme tonight.
This new science strand on channel five (for non-Brits- formerly known for
its soft porn agenda in an effort to attract viewers as a new terrestrial
channel launched in the mid-1990s) is interesting in intent, and I thought
Greenfield's programme was straightforward and clear-cut, a bit like an old
Open University programme, or first year lecture, unfortunately it was
filmed with that 1970s production values that used to dog OU programmes.
They are following up with a series on great scientists including galileo
and einstein which may be similar.
I wonder what the list think about the popularisation of science in the
media- these attempts to make science accessible. I wonder if science memes
aren't innnately niche memes that rarely have the kind of general reach that
other ways of thinking have, not least religion memes. Even the Discovery
Science channel has a paranormal strand on it, so even the pop science big
guns like Dawkins, seem to be losing out.
