Simple: what you have experienced or thought up that you have not
attempted to communicate to another are memories outside the subset
of memes (although still potentially memes, if you should decide to do
so), that which you have experienced or thought up that you have
attempted to communicate to another is memetic. You have had
experiences or thoughts that you have never communicated, haven't
you? I certainly have.
Of course, any experiment requires communication. Thus, you are
asking for verification of the state of Heisenberg's cat before the box is
opened.
