The reasons for my sad reply were that we, in Australia, are failing on every question asked above. We once had a fair and equitable education system where access was dependant on ability to learn and not ability to pay; this has now changed under the conservative Howard Government. The divide between rich and poor grows wider and xenophobia is rampant. The research of our universities is being channelled into industry based public/private 'partnerships' with no funds available for philosophy, social, ecological or moral inquiry. Refugees to our shores are mandatorialy incarcerated for years, even innocent children, behind electrified razor wire before being forced back to the lands from which they escaped. Motivated by dubious pecuniary benefit, and on doubtful evidence, we have participated in an unauthorised, mechanised killing spree which has left thousands of innocent people dead or dying from injury and disease and made the world a more dangerous place. Indigenous Australians comprise 2% of the population yet fill 40% of our prison cells. Our Churches and institutions cover up paedophilia. Even our Governor General is tainted by ignorance and reticence in this regard. We are trashing our environment for a quick 'buck'. The cost of fixing the damage will be unachievable, and the kids know it. Advance Australia Fair? Where? More in sorrow than in anger Jeremy
