    I like, in a way, the simple, MTV model of meme- hey, dude, spread that meme. It seems somehow right to relegate that word to slang.

    It seems to me it's pretty much up to the people who use the word what they want to use it for. Restricting its use only makes sense for people who are trying to make memetics into a science. Look how long the "social sciences" have been striving for the rigor necessary to feel comfortable with that idea. It's not something likely to happen in my lifetime.
