Actually this kind of stuff goes on all the time. At Flag Fen, near Peterborough in England, there is a working/functioning iron age settlement, and I believe there are similar re-constructed historical communities all over the place- isn't there an American one near Plymouth Rock? In a sense historical re-enactment (US or English Civil War re-enactment springs to mind as well), is a kind cultural Jurassic Park.
