I think displacing them would require the ideas to
be really useful...or we would need to figure out how to make memetics a
powerful virus...in which case, we would have demonstrated that it was
really useful.

Why do we have to displace them? People in different disciplines use
different words to refer to the same phenomena all the time. I don't see
any need to have one word that displaces all competitors in all fields. If
there is a need, the normal competition between memes will cause it to
happen. People will choose the best word for the job they want to do. If
they decide later that it wasn't the best word, the next time they'll choose
a different one. That's memetic evolution in action. It's also linguistic
evolution and cultural evolution.
